The Northern Virginia Majestics failed to contain the Charlotte Lady Eagles, suffering a 5-0 defeat last night in Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite holding the Eagles offense in check for most of the initial half, the Majestics allowed five unanswered goals in the final forty-five minutes of play to drop the second road game in as many nights.
Similar to their match the previous evening in Atlanta, the Majestics did a fair job in containing the Charlotte attack throughout the majority of the first half. Although outshot 9-4 by the home side, Northern Virginia kept the Eagle offense in front of them and limited the quality of the Charlotte shots on goal.
Nevertheless, the home-side Lady Eagles would deny the visiting Majestics a halftime draw, scoring their first goal of the night in injury time of the first half. Charlotte veteran Christy Rife fed teammate Ashleigh Gunning for the 1-0 Eagle advantage at the break.
With the late first-half goal still fresh on their minds, the second half played out as an absolute nightmare for Northern Virginia. The deflated Majestics seemingly collapsed, providing the Eagles with numerous opportunities from defensive lapses and mistakes. Additional Charlotte goals by Gunning, Blakely Mattern, and substitute Jessica Rostedt (2) readily dispatched the visitors with the 5-0 scoreline.
“Giving up thirteen goals in three matches is ridiculous at this level,” commented General Manager Tim Schweitzer. “In the three games prior, we only allowed two (goals) defensively, so this is becoming hard to stomach.”
“Its embarrassing to me, I would think the team would feel the same way and make some serious strides to correct it,” concluded Schweitzer.
Northern Virginia returns home on Saturday, July 3rd, for a rematch against Charlotte at Hellwig Memorial Park in Manassas, Virginia. Match time is scheduled for 7:00PM.
