Fredericksburg Tops Majestics 3-1
Northern Virginia Drops Season Opener
Despite an energized offense in the second half, the Northern Virginia Majestics fell to local rival Fredericksburg Impact 3-1 at Mary Washington University this afternoon. Ultimately, it was two free kicks that doomed the Majestics and gave the impact the opening day victory.
The first half saw defensive play from Northern Virginia as the home side pressured the back line for much of the initial forty-five minutes. Though playing on the back of their heels early on, the Majestics defense held solid and only allowed a few serious chances on frame from the quick Impact forwards.
Fredericksburg’s offensive received a break just before half when an aggressive tackle just outside the top of the box led the referee to award a close-range free kick opportunity. Defender Sandra Matute fired her shot from twenty yards out around the wall and into the right side of the Majestics goal for the 1-0 advantage in the 42nd minute.

Collegiate Standouts Resign with Northern Virginia W-League
In rapid preparation for next weekend’s season opener, the Northern Virginia Majestics announced today the resigning of three returning players fresh from successful college years. Alex Reed (Maryland), Alyson Gregorowicz (Tampa), and Sahar Aflaki (Radford) will rejoin a Majestics squad under a new coaching staff.
A transfer from Loyola College, Reed played forward for the Maryland Terrapins this season and scored a dramatic overtime game-winner against George Washington University. Prior to college, Reed was a two-time all-state selection while at South County High School in Fairfax, Virginia.
A teammate of Reed’s at South County, Gregorowicz will find herself in familiar territory again featured in the Northern Virginia defense. The solid Gregorowicz spent last fall anchoring the Spartan backline, contributing to the University of Tampa’s 16-6-2 season record.
The speedy Aflaki returns to the Majestics attack after starting her collegiate career as a forward for the Radford Highlanders. Aflaki’s earlier soccer prowess at Battlefield High School in Manassas, Virginia, earned her numerous all-state and all-region honors.
